Black
Bear Hunting
A
combination of genetics and very low hunting pressure
make the Newfoundland Black Bear bigger than any of their
cousins found in North America. Frequently weighing in
over 500 lbs., their numbers are estimated at over 10
thousand animals. It is only a matter of time before a
Newfoundland Black Bear shatters the current North American
records. These magnificent predators make for an interesting
hunt for the knowledgeable, fearless, and experienced
hunter.
|
Bow
Hunting
As
stated on previous pages, Newfoundland offers a bowhunting
season that opens 2 weeks earlier than the standard rifle
hunting season. This will give the bowhunter and unprecedented
opportunity to engage in a world class bow hunt.
Our
guides are fully experienced and qualified to lead you to
a successful bowhunting trip. For more information, please
contact Spruce Ponds Outfitting at 709 243-2801,
or email us at info@spruceponds.com.

Location
Spruce Pond Outfitters
is ideally located in central Newfoundland on Spruce Pond.
In the hunting area, Spruce Pond is a central location for
prime moose and black bear habitat, and over 12 thousand
woodland caribou. If you fly into Newfoundland via the Stephenville
or Deer Lake airports, ground transportation will be provided
to a helicopter base where you will be flown into Spruce
Pond Lodge. Hunters traveling the Marine Atlantic ferry
to Port aux Basques will take approximately 2 1/2 hours
from the ferry terminal to the helicopter base at Peter
Stride's Lake on the Burgeo highway.
Via the
Deer Lake or Stephenville airports traveling times from
all major cities on the eastern seaboard of Canada and the
United States takes less than 1 day.
Traveling times
are also less than 1 day from the U.S. Midwest, and from
centres such as Detroit and Chicago, generally within 6
to 8 hours.

The
Lodge
The main lodge of Spruce
Pond Outfitting sits astride Spruce Pond
itself. All major hunting expeditions start at this lodge.
It can accommodate up to 4 to 6 hunters comfortably, and
is equipped with electricity, running water and hot showers.
Hot, home-cooked meals provided by our staff will make
your stay even more enjoyable.

Clothing
Temperatures
can vary during the fall season from 60F / 5 C during the
day to slightly below freezing at night. We suggest light
fleece or woolen outer clothing supplemented by thermal
underclothing, light rubber marsh boots (below the knee with
tapered ankle), rain gear, gloves, hat and woolen socks.
Blaze orange is not a requirement and camouflage is suggested
but not essential.
|
Binoculars
and Cameras
Quality binoculars
are important when sizing up your trophy: 7X35 being a good
choice. We recommend bringing a camera, preferably a 35
mm with a telephoto lens to capture your hunting experience.
Compact camcorders and digital cameras are also very popular.
|
Rifles
Popular calibers
are 30-06, 270, 338, and 7 mm. All have sufficient power
and range for our game. Rifles should be sighted for 150
- 200 yards.
